What Causes Persistent Cough After Drinking Water?

default
Posted on Sat, 23 Apr 2016
Question: What could be the cause of coughing after drinking water (Lukewarm or cold)? I hear that this could be acid reflux. I don't know. What can solve this situation?

For correction, the only medicine subscribed was Mucinex, MD but that was when I had a cold with a cough, but now that I'm over the cold and cough with the cold, every time I drink water I have to cough.

Brief Answer:
For how long has this been going on?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this cough after drinking. In most cases, this is caused by false routes. I will suggest that you stay composed when drinking fluids. Also, for how long has this been going on? Do you have any difficulties with food?

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be. Above all, thanks for using our services.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Coughing after drinking means there is a false route. This happens when the swallowing reflex is not well coordinated. I will suggest that you talk to an ENT doctor to evaluate your swallowing to make sure it is well coordinated. By composed I mean being careful as there is a possible risk that liquids could go into the wrong tract.

In all, talk to an ENT specialist for evaluation. In the interim, be careful each time you swallow for risk of false route.

Let me know what your thoughts are.
