What Causes Painful Swelling In The Ankle After Colonoscopy?

default
Posted on Thu, 11 Aug 2016
Question: Hi, back in April I had my first colonoscopy. Everything was fine, but ever since I have been having angina and here recently my right ankle has been swelling up and it hurts. I take Plavix and aspirin due to a heart attack I had 8 years ago and I was off of those for about 5 days before the colonoscopy. What are your thoughts? I am actually going to the doctor tomorrow and I wanted some suggestions on what to talk to her about.

Brief Answer:
I would recommend performing some tests:

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I passed carefully through your question and would explain that your symptoms are not related to the performed colonoscopy.

The pain in your ankle could be relate to inflammation or hematoma (aspirin and plavix taken concomitantly for a long period could lead to increased risk of bleeding, even in the joints).

From the other hand angina needs further investigations to exclude possible coronary artery stenosis, which may need intervention.

Coming to this point I would recommend consulting with your attending physician for a physical exam and performing some tests:

- a resting ECG and cardiac ultrasound to examine your cardiac function and structure
- a cardiac stress test to investigate for possible coronary artery stenosis. Further tests (coronary angio CT scan or coronarography) may be needed if suspicions of coronary artery stenosis are raised.
- an ancle X ray study to examine for possible chronic degeneration of the joint
- some blood lab tests (coagulation tests, complete blood count, sedimentation rate, PCR, kidney and liver function tests).

You should discuss with your doctor on the above tests.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
