default
Posted on Mon, 30 Mar 2015
Question: I have white spots on the sides and back of my tongue. some spots are beginning to appear on the top also. they hurt terribly. I don't see any on my throat. It looks like the spots are mulitplying and moving together to form a blanket look covering. the pain is awful. i'm going to rinse with salt water to see if that helps. Can please tell me what this is and why it hurts so bad? Thanks you

Brief Answer:
it seems to be fungal infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome to Healthcare Magic,

I read carefully your query and understand your concern.

It seems that you are having a fungal infection of the tongue.
The fungal infection causes inflammation of the tongue and for this reason it is painful.
I suggest to rinse your mouth with salt water 3-4 times a day.You can try an over the counter antifungal drug like Miconazole oral gel ,Clotrimazole , Nystatin .Usually they are taken 4 times a day and continued up to some days until the symptoms are completely gone.
It is important to cut back on refined sugars, avoid dairy products, and eating one clove of garlic per day can help with the infection.

If your symptoms doesn't seem to improve you should consult a physician. In this case you may need a stronger antifungal treatment that is available with prescription.

Hope it helps.
Let me know if you need further help.

Kind regards,
Dr.Rovena Murati
