What Causes Pain In The Ribs When Diagnosed With Peripheral Neuropathy?

default
Posted on Wed, 12 Jul 2017
Question: I woke up during the night with pain on my right mid back rib cage area. I usually sleep with one pillow, but I added 2 more pillows and that relieved the pain a little, but I could not sleep. Now sitting up the pain is milder, but not gone. I am 84 years old and in good health mostly. I do have peripheral neuropathy and a-fib.
This sharp pain when lying down does make me wonder what I should do. Could this be an aneursym or something else?
Thanks, XXXXXXX B.

Brief Answer:
Cardiac cause should be ruled out primarily

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Chest pain should not be taken lightly. A cardiac cause should always be ruled out. A baseline EKG and cardiac enzymes should be obtained. If there are any changes then serial EKGs can be advised to look for any acute event. If there is local tenderness with normal EKG then costochondritis would be treated empirically with NSAIDs.

Atrial Fibrillation doesn't directly lead to pain. It can present with palpitation , confusion weakness and shortness of breath.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
