Posted on Thu, 8 May 2014
Question: I have extreme pain in my front right thigh-doctor has prescribed end one and Valium to take in addition to tramadol which I have been taking for some time for back pain - the leg pain first presented last November and lasted about two weeks - recently came on one week ago while away from home-can't have X-ray until after Easter holiday still experiencing severe pain despite medications - could it be bone cancer? What to do for some relief? Many thanks

Brief Answer: Due to nerve root irritation. Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for posting your query. The pain in the front of the thigh is likely to be due to a minor nerve root compression at the level of lumbar spine due to degenerative changes in the spine. In the absence of any other systemic symptoms a bone cancer is the least likely possibility. The main treatment of such problem is bed rest along with pain killers and muscle relaxants. Muscle relaxants can help with your symptoms if used in appropriate dosage in combination with a potent analgesic. You can get these prescribed from your orthopedician. Also check if tablet Cataflam is available over the counter at your nearest pharmacy. Local analgesic gels and hot fomentation may provide a short term relief. You can use analgesic gels like Volini gel. Exercise is not advisable in the times of acute pain. Using an LS contour belt of appropriate size might be helpful in providing support to back muscles. Physiotherapy also plays a major role in treating such conditions. Such minor symptoms are usually taken care of by Methylcobalamin supplements which you can take after consulting your orthopedician. Do not lift heavy objects, especially after bending down. Eat a healthy wholesome meal which should satisfy your minerals and proteins requirement. I hope this answers your query. What is meant by hot fomentation? Also I live alone and have no one to care for me I.e. Shop for and prepare food so there is not much in the fridge or cupboard- I am only just able to live on toast and tea which I can prepare with difficulty as the kitchen is downstairs -should I go to a hospital?

Brief Answer: Consult an orthopedician. Detailed Answer: Hello. Thanks for writing again. Hot fomentation refers to giving a warm compress on your lower back to have relief. You can use a towel dipped in warm water or a hot water bottle for this purpose. If the pain is persistent then it is best to consult your doctor for proper prescription medicines. This will provide you an early relief. Hope my answer is helpful. Do accept my answer in case there are no further queries. Regards.
