What Causes Pain In Nipples After Having Morphine?

default
Posted on Fri, 16 Jan 2015
Question: I have been on pain meds for a while for Cystic Fibrosis, currently on extended morphine 30mg, BID and morphine IR 15mg, TID. I have taken these meds for a while. However, about a month ago, when I even take one 15mg pill, I now get pain near my left nipple area and I feel very buzzed, when before this was not the case. If I dont take this med, I am fine. When I take the long acting med, about a couple hours later I feel lightly buzzed and have some pain, but not as much, over the same area. Again, when I am not taking these meds, I am fine, even when I exercise. What could be going on?

Brief Answer:
Morphine causing it , many ways

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

i read your question and i understand your concern. Morphine is notorious for sch complaints. It may be due to multifactorial reasons. Like morphine causes abdominal pains by slowing th emotility and delaying peristalsis resulting in GERD also called gastric reflux.

Also morphine can cause sever anxiety and anxiety presents this way with chest pain too.

Morphine also causes respiratory depression and deranged metabolic profile like respiratory acidosis alkalosis etc may also give such chest pain.

Worst cases scenarios may affect heart and may need an ECG to rule out.

Morphine also compresses the sphincter of oddi , sphincter where bile from bile duct opens into the duodenum of GIT.

Pain medication are very much notorious for prostaglandin synthesis inhibition and that causes gastritis and inflammation of gastric and whole GIT mucosa.

Nut shell, Seek a gastroenterologist and get some ant acids and modify the pain medications. Its time to taper off the morphines and try some alternatives for that. Let your pain medical specialist be the judge of that.

I hope it helps. Take good care of yourself and dont forget to close the discussion please.

may the odds be ever in your favour.

So if I am hearing you correctly, the drug does not directly affect the heart, but can affect it via respiratory problems, GERD, and such correct? I was told in the past that morphine doesnt hurt the heart directly, but chest pain can be the symptom of other things caused by the morphine, yes?

Also, would another narcotic like hydromorphone, oxycottin, etc be different if those meds work on different receptor sites? I cant take NSAIDS for pain due to kidney issues caused by my Cystic Fibrosis, so I do need a narcotic, but I am trying to find a safe one with the least side effects.

Brief Answer:
Yes

Detailed Answer:
Thank youf or asking!

Morphine may act directly on heart but that is rare. It does so mostly by cardiac arrest and shock but frequency of it is not defined due to its rarity.

All opioids have same adverse effects , they may act on different receptors, but their mechanism of relief matches and so does their adverse effects profile. But the addiction tendencies are variable and safest ones are methadones for that matter.

And yes symptoms are indirectly caused by morphine. anxiety and GERD are two likely possibilities

NSAIDs will worsen the condition. As i said let your pain management expert be the judge of whats next. I agree cystic fibrosis can be a challenge but it needs to be tackled with expertise. I ams ure your pain meds experts are capable of that.

Take care
