Posted on Mon, 23 Mar 2015
Question: Female age 77 wo was on various statins for about 20 years. stopped taking statins a year ago after experiencing leg pain and one thigh seemed to have lost muscle.
Problem-- severe pain in both thighs while lying down. it lessened when started moving around. .
What could have caused the pain
Are there lasting effects from taking statins
Can muscles recover if damaged by statins? thanks

Brief Answer:
They usually recover

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

statins may indeed cause muscle problems presenting with pain and being accompanied by Creatine Phosphokinase (CPK) elevation or not. Before attributing the pain to the statin you'd better exclude other potential reasons, like vascular, neurological or orthopedic problems. Vascular problems notoriously get worse with activity so they can be safely excluded.

Statins may indeed cause pain (myopathy) which usually resolves within a couple of months after stopping the drug. The muscles do recover and the pain subsides.

If you've had red urine (like if there was blood in the urine) you need immediate medical attention to avoid damage to your kidneys. Also checking your CPK and aldolase levels may prove muscular damage either by the statin or by any other cause.

I hope I've helped!

Brief Answer:
Neuritis, lumbar disc herniation

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

neural damage by any cause (eg drugs, toxins, viruses, diabetes etc) may present with pain. Clinical examination helps to define the tender area and decide whether it's compatible with damage of a certain nerve or a bunch of nerves.

Lumbar disc herniation is a common cause of leg pain. The intervertebral disc may slip and exert pressure to the nerves that come out of the spinal cord. The same may happen when pressure is exerted on the nerves by any other cause (hematoma, infection, tumor, etc)

Kind Regards!
