Question: Hi,
My mother in law is suffering from knee pain. She consulted a orthopedic. He said that there is gap between the knee bone. She is can't walk properly. He started some medicine including some calcium dose & other medicines. She started the medicine but she couldnt get any results upto 3 months.
Then she visited one of our relative doctor, he suggested that taking lots of medicine for joint pain including calcium intake is not good for kidney and may affect the functioning of other parts of body.I want to ask you that, Is that true?
What kind of treatment you will suggest?
Any ayurvedic treatment is available for this?

Brief Answer:
Osteoarthritis likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
At her age, the common cause of knee pain is osteoarthritis. Taking pain killers is a part of treatment and it can cause a kidney damage if taken for 8-10 years without a break. Taking it just for 3 months will not cause a renal damage.
For osteoarthritis, weight reduction is the main treatment along with medicines to decrease pain like NSAID's - paracetamol, aceclofenac etc., Life style modifications like avoiding sitting cross legged, squatting, using XXXXXXX type toilets will decrease the rate of progression of osteoarthritis. Exercises like quadriceps strengthening, swimming, straight leg raising will help in improving the muscle strength around the knee and will help in decreasing pain.
In mean time, this should help.

1. Ask her to more of fruits, vegetables soups etc.
2. Maintain healthy routine, keep walking till she has pain, and just stop before pain starts
3. Apply some analgesic ointment over the site of pain
4. Milk and milk products are good source of calcium
Hot fomentation to decrease the joint stiffness
Hot bath of Epsom salts (magnesium sulphate)-Magnesium has both anti-inflammatory and anti- arthritic properties and it can be absorbed through the skin.
I hope this answers your query.

Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Joint replacement is done only when there is no relief with medicines and patient is in acute severe pain. After the replacement, the pain will become less severe, regular physiotherapy will be needed, she will not be able to squat and the joint will need a re replacement after 10-12 years.
Pain killers may be needed even after replacement.
Calcium supplements are available in ayurveda as well as in allopathic medicines. You can consult an ayurvedacharya for proper prescriptions.
Calcium intake can affect the kidneys if she has a predisposition for stone deposition.
Hope my answer is helpful.
