What Causes Pain In Hands And Feet?

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Apr 2015
Question: My 6yr old daughter is having pains in both hands and both feet at the same time at any point during the day and night. She keeps squeezing her hands and feet trying to alleviate the pain by stretching. What could cause pain in all four distal extremities like this ? I cant imagine it would be something serious such as cancer or lymphoma as any mass causing like symptom would be localized and not affecting other extremities. Motrin helps alleviate the pain but the pain comes back throughout the day . Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

She's been complaing of pain for a few months and has no swelling or rash like symptoms . Hlshebis a small girl but no real changes in weight have occurred although she does not gain weight easily aven with a normal appetite which is normal for her. The entire hands and feet hurt with an aching pain. No arthritis in the family except for my 80 yr old grandmother . She has no fever and is acting normal except for the complaints of pain in her hands and feet . The only hx she has is a febrile seizure at 8 months or so . She is 6 now and has never had any other seizure or neurological deficit.
Thanks again Dr. XXXXXXX

Detailed Answer:
Hi... If I were your pediatrician I would do the following -

1. CBC/ ESR/ CRP/ Renal function tests and Liver function tests
2. ANA
3. Vitamin D levels.

Get her blood pressure checked once.

We need to rule out -

1. Connective tissue disorders
2. Vitamin D deficiency.
