What Causes Pain In Groin Area Radiating To Foot?

default
Posted on Thu, 25 Jun 2015
Question: Hello, For several years I have this pain that starts in my groin and goes down as far as my foot. I have had several different tests done and no one can find out what it is. At one time, I was on a pain patch it was so bad, it may disappear for weeks or even months on end and then rears its ugly head again. I sit with ice packs on, and take pain meds, and then I lose sleep. At times it hurts so bad, that I can hardly press the gas pedal down to drive, or at times I just have to keep walking around, because sitting hurts so bad.

Brief Answer:
Several features....

Detailed Answer:
there are certain patterns of pain that strongly imply what is going on. while I cot say about your particular situation without examining you there are several broad categories of pain.
plain inflammation...generally the place of the pain looks inflamed generally the person knows why it is there..generally there is a simple fixable cause.
there is the closely related muscle pain. move the muscle and it hurts.poke the muscle and it hurts
there is made up pain. it goes all over the place and the person isn't reasonable and it tends to be there a lot

and then there is nerve pain. it feels...funny.often burning or cold or pins and needles or electrical. it shoots in the pathway out from a nerve. there are two groups. the people I just saw have SICK NERVES. the ends of the limbs are most susceptible. it is funny feeling pins and needles. it can be from a medical disease like diabetes or low salts or hyperventilation. mostly cause not found.

then there is HURT NERVE. this is singular.one. often the nerve is damaged. often from an obvious thing like a disk. but it can be from a virus...shingles....or from Lyme disease
you would do an imaging study like an MRI to look around the nerve.
Lyme testing
then..any nerve pill will work and narcotics do not work very well on nerve pain.
nerve pills include
amitryptiline
Dilantin
gabapentin
pregabalin
and also lidocaine patch

again I cannot diagnose your pain but I suspect you have a pretty good idea which category into which it fits
general questions about general categories of pain I can answer well

I do not have inflammation and there was/is no injury. I do have fibromyalgia, so I know/think I know what nerve pain feels like....this feels different. I do take Lyrica prn, and it doesn't really help this pain.

Are there any over the counter meds/ pain patches that I might try, as I have no pain meds and will not be able to see a doctor until next Tuesday. Ibuprophen doesn't really do anything either. As I said, it is really hard to pinpoint, because it comes and goes.

Brief Answer:
Ok......fibromyalgia

Detailed Answer:
frankly I have no idea what the follow up question is
but on fibromyalgia there's the conventional...and the extension of it
the conventional is muscle relaxants like methyl car amok..or axion, antidepressants like amitryptiline and a lot of exercise

the extension of these is to work on the habituation of pain which is a bit off in fibromyalgia. a behavioral approach to increase functional capacity
