What Causes Pain In Anus While Passing Stool?

default
Posted on Sat, 2 Aug 2014
Question: I am 58 and had been having mild pain in my anus while sitting and while passing stool. Thee is no bleeding whatsover. I consulted a GP who did not do a clinical examination but diagnosed my condition as
1. Anal Fissure (symptomatic) 2. External Haemorrhoids (asymptomatic)
I was prescribed Duphalac suspension (bedtime), Sucralcoat & cream for external application and a pain killer. I was also prescribed sitz bath for 10 days.
I completed the above procedure/medication and there was no pain and I felt normal. However, lately I have again been having mild pain and am unable to sit for long hours and pain while passing stool (no bleeding). What non surgical oral procedure can I adopt to relieve my pain and cure the above condition. Is there a need to do a Proctoscopy at this stage?

Brief Answer:
You can wait for proctoscopy.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for posting your query.

Your family physician seems to be right, your symptoms points towards possibility of anal fissure.

Following should help:

Drink plenty of fluids
Avoid constipation
Continue sitz bath
Avoid fried foods and spicy foods.
Avoid sitting on hard surface.

In spite of above measures if you do not have significant relief and recurrence of symptoms then examination by a surgeon becomes mandatory.

The treatment principles remain more or less similar but we can surely get diagnosis.

Most of the cases respond well to medication in early stages and surgery is not required.

I hope this helps.

Dr.Pragnesh

Dr thanks v much for your advice which was very useful.

I can also feel a small skin tag at the rectal base which is possibly an external haemmaroid. How is this to be cured? Is surgery requied or can it heal thru oral medciation?

Brief Answer:
Mostly measures mentioned earlier will do.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Good to hear from you again.

Normally the above mentioned measures take care of it also.

Avoid constipation.

Most of the cases do not require further treatment. In case it becomes very painful and which makes sitting difficult you might need to consult some surgeon as advised earlier.
