What Causes Pain Beneath The Sternum?

default
Posted on Wed, 7 Dec 2016
Question: I have pain beneath my sternum. It's been there for almost a week. I can't sleep due to the pain. I have dry heaves this morning. Visited a PA last week. Told to double up on Nexium and scheduled for consult for possible endoscopy. Not sure I can wait that long. Any suggestions?

Brief Answer:
It could be due to reflux esophagitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Pain behind the sternum is usually due to reflux esophagitis or pertaining to heart.

Since you have not mentioned about any other symptoms I am also of the opinion that you could be suffering from esophagitis. Do you have any major health issues like high BP and diabetes. Keeping your age in view you should also get a complete heart check up done.

You have already been started on nexium which you should continue and get your endoscopy done. Avoid taking pain killers esp those belonging to NSAID group as they may aggravate your symptoms.
