What Causes Pain Around Kidney Area After Coughing Hard?

default
Posted on Mon, 9 Feb 2015
Question: Yes please... I am getting on a a bad cold which was accompanied by violent coughing due to my sinuses draining down my throat. This has been going on for a week. I am getting over the cold now, but earlier today I was coughing kinda hard while sitting at my desk, when I felt a really sharp pain on my left side kidney area. It really hurts now whenever I bend over or have to cough again. Did I possibly tear something while coughing or is my kidney having an issue?

Brief Answer:
likely muscular strain

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is likely muscular strain induced by the bout of coughing.

Kidney related disease would present with symptoms related to the urinary tract- blood in the urine, discomfort on urination, change in the color/odor of urine, pain from loin to groin, change in the appearance of the urine etc

The fact that the pain occurred after an intense coughing bout and it is worse with particular movements imply it is likely muscular.

This means the use of anti inflammatory pain killers such as ibuprofen, cataflam or naproxen would help.
Should be used on a full stomach to avoid irritation to the stomach lining.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
