What Causes Pain And Numbness In Right Hand?

default
Posted on Thu, 19 May 2016
Question: I have pain and numbness in right hand, carpal tunnel has been ruled out through MRI and EMG. Recently, I have had random "shocks" from my thumb to between my collar bones. The pain is becoming unbearable. What could be causing this?

Brief Answer:
Can be due to cervical spondylosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain and numbness in the hand and shock like feeling is due to a nerve compression. If carpal tunnel has been ruled out then the nerve compression can happen at elbow or due to cervical spondylosis. Proper nerve stretching exercises, methylcobalamin supplements and pregabalin can help to treat such nerve related pains. It is best to consult a neurologist for proper evaluation.
I hope this answers your query.

The MRI was on my neck and upper back, no nerve damage or compression found. EMG test results from just below arm pits to finger tips in both arms, results normal. I do have fibromialgia, could this be the cause? I have been trying to seek a solution, or at least an answer for 15 months. It's one dead end after another.

Brief Answer:
NCV testing can help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
If EMG was normal then it is best to get NCV testing done. This will tell specifically about any nerve damage. Fibromyalgia is usually associated with a whole body ache and fatigue. A shooting pain in the hand is less likely. It should be a nerve related issue.
Hope my answer is helpful.
