What Causes Pain And Discolouration In The Fingernail After A Finger Injury?

default
Posted on Thu, 21 May 2015
Question: I hit my middle finger with a 5lb sledge hammer but in an upward movement. he fingernail turned back and blue and the flesh on the opposite side reddened but now is more of bluish color. Still throbs though. Should I seek medical treatment or chalk it up to life's lessons of knowing where your fingers are before swinging the hammer.

Brief Answer:
The pressure needs to be relieved by trephining.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
You have a Subungual hematoma.
If it pains even after 3 to 4 days then it might require trephining to decrease the pressure under the nail caused by the blood clot. A small hole can be drilled into the nail and the clot can be removed and then you would be pain free.
Therefore, see a Surgeon who can get you relieved of your pain and the clot can be relieved. Do not worry, Its a very minor procedure.
Take care,
