What Causes Odour Less Discharge During Menstrual Bleeding?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Apr 2017
Question: During my period I have noticed I get a heavy amount of clear, thin, odorless discharge. Enough to soak through my tampon and completely wet my underwear and pants. Any ideas as to what this could be?

Brief Answer:
Explanation is given below....

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear and thanks for your query to healthcare magic .

I have read your question and understand your concern and I will try to give an explanation.

It's difficult to define exactly what a heavy period is because this varies from woman to woman.
What's heavy for one woman may be normal for another.
The average amount of blood lost during a period is 30-40 millilitres (ml), with 9 out of 10 women losing less than 80ml.
Heavy menstrual bleeding is considered to be 60ml or more in each cycle.

A good indication that your blood loss is excessive is that your blood soak tampon and wet completely underwear and pants .

But I should know that this heavy bleeding happen every time you are on periods or is the first time and how many days last this heavy vaginal bleeding ?!

If heavy bleeding happen only the first three days of your periods and your cycle haven't change ,than there is nothing to worry.

But if heavy bleeding last more than three days (you change many tampons or pads on a day)and your cycle have changed from normal bleeding to heavy than you should see a doctor .
The most common reasons are :
1.a fibroid (benign growths in women's womb)
2.endometriosis(is your cycle painful)
3.Polycystic ovary syndrome(Is your cycle regular)

Hence if you will see a doctor you should do minimally a transvaginal scan to exclude the causes I have write above and a blood test to see if you are or not anemic(a deficiency of red blood cells or of hemoglobin in the blood).

Hope I have answered your question and please feel free for further discussion.

Best regards

Brief Answer:
It is normal

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear again and apologies for late reply.

Usually white vaginal discharges are prior and during ovulation due to hormonal changes(increase levels of blood progesterone).

Since you're having excessive clear vaginal discharge while you menstruate, without any other signs and symptoms, such as abdominal pain with / or no smell/odor, itchy feeling etc., there is nothing to worry.

I have seen many women with these issues during my clinical practice, but it's normal finding.
Hence be calm and not be stressed.

Hope I have answered your questions and please feel free for further discussion.

Best regards
