What Causes Nephrotic Syndrome In A Child?

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Oct 2014
Question: My nephew got swelling on face and eyes nearly a week back.

We visited a pediatrician and he suggested us to get the Urine and Blood test done. In reports, the albumin level was very high. Doctor mentioned it as a symptoms of Nephritis. and gave us Omnacortil 10 mg, Gelucil for acidity, and A2Z multivitamin tonic.

His swelling has gone now and level of albumin in second Urine test has also come down to significantly less.

But he has told us to continue Omnacortil for another 3-4 weeks. So, please advise if it is fine or there are any side effects???

Brief Answer:
Nephrotic syndrome

Detailed Answer:
I have gone through the details carefully. The child is suffering from nephrotic syndrome and probably not from nephritis. The first blood test also reveals hyperlipidemia (increased cholesterol) which occurs commonly in nephrotic syndrome. In such a disease, the capillary wall of the filtering membrane of the kidney structures becomes leaky and the protein leaks out into the urine. This causes low protein left in blood and is responsible for the swelling of the face, a condition we refer to as oedema. Omnacortil or steroids are treatment of choice and need to be continued for a few weeks before the decision of tapering off can be taken. If properly tapered off, you need not worry about side effects. Side effects occur especially when the steroids are abruptly stopped. Please note that in some cases, relapse of the disease may occur and may require recurrent management with steroids and may even require kidney biopsy for confirmation. Do not worry as your pediatrician is treating on the right lines.
