What Causes Nausea After Knee Replacement Surgery?
Question: My husband had total knee replacement surgery two weeks ago (April 28), and he seemed to do fine the first week after surgery, but then about 7 days ago, he started having nausea, has not wanted to eat, has no energy, etc. We have tried giving him soft bland foods, what little bit he would take, and he has taken pepto bismol which usually helps him, but the nausea still comes and goes. He does not actually vomit, but breaks out in cold sweat and is just nauseated. He goes back to the surgeon this afternoon, but he lost his primary care Dr. about a month ago because he left the practice he was with. He is not on any different medications since he left the hospital. He did not fill the pain meds or the muscle relaxer, but has done really well with his knee. It is just he other stuff. Do you have any thoughts on what is causing this and does he need something further? It is taking its toll on him mentally too because these feelings are putting a damper on his recovery exercises, etc. Thank you.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Madam,
Thank you for posting your query on HCM.
Well looking into your problem I would like to tell you that nausea that he is having can be due to acidity due to the pain killer medicines since they are notorious for causing that , it seems to be the most relevant explanation provided the given information . I would advise to give him a combination of omeprazole and domperidone rather than omeprazole alone . It will help on controlling nausea.
Since you dont give any history of abdominal pain and loose motions the infection is unlikely . If he doesnt improve then I will suggest getting a USG abdomen and LFT done to see if something else is not going on.
Take care.
