What Causes Nausea After A Meal While Treating Diverticulitis?

default
Posted on Thu, 17 Aug 2017
Question: I am a 69 year old mail presently being treated for a mild diverticulitis flare-up over two weeks ago. I underwent a CT scan and was successfully treated with augmentin. However, for the past 2 weeks, I've been bothered with a low grade nausea and escalates when I eat. Sometimes, the discomfort is quite severe. I've tried coating my stomach before a meal with pepto bismol, but nothing seems to give me total relief. I am scheduled for an endoscopy this week, along with a colonoscopy. My anxiety is getting the best of me. I'm so afraid of something severe. Could this be a peptic ulcer? Wouldn't that have shown up in the CT scan? Awaiting your reply.

Brief Answer:
ulcer might not show up on CT

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I am sorry that you are having these symptoms. I am glad that you are scheduled for the endoscopy and colonoscopy soon.
This could come from the stomach, something like an ulcer or other problem or it could come from farther down in the intestines or colon.
If there is an obstruction then that could cause nausea when you eat.
If you are not having pain then a complete obstruction is not likely.
If you get the upper endoscopy and colonoscopy, these tests should be able to locate the problem so that treatment can be done.
I suggest that you try taking 20 mg of prilosec 30 minutes before your biggest meal of the day and see if this helps with symptoms. it should work better than pepto bismol.
Regards,
Dr. Robinson
