What Causes Nasal Congestion During Sleep In An Infant?

Question: Hi dr,
My 11 month old baby girl is facing nasal blockage while sleeping. This is happening from last 10 days now. Initially I thought it's just a cold and ignored. But gradually she started producing snoring sound with bouts of coughing. I consulted a Paed who said that she has caught an infection from her elder sibling who is 3.5 yr old and was suffering from Rhinosinusitis. She too seems to be having the same. Dr gave her Sefdin syrup with nebulisation and steam. The antibiotic didn't make much difference. Now dr has given us ascoril ls drops with omnacortil plus nebulisation. From last 3 days she is having heavy and continuous nasal discharge. She eats with great difficulty and tries to puke. She has been peeing on an average 5-6 times a day. Most of the difficulty is faced in the night when she sleeps. At times she breathes from mouth too. What shall I do..I am extremely worried...will she get cured? Please help

Brief Answer:
Steam inhalation would be greatly beneficial.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Rhinosinusitis is rather a scientific terminology for what otherwise you would have described as the problem. It is not the name of the disease. It is most often caused due to viral cause and hence Sefdin (cefdinir), an antibiotic, is unlikely to provide any benefits. You need to give Ascoril LS or some antiallergic like cetirizine once daily. Alongside you need to give saline nasal drops like Nasoclear whenever you feel that the block could be present. I am not sure whether Omnacortil was essential but would have to leave it upon the clinical judgment of the doctor. You need to give nebulisation. Steam inhalation is its home alternative that can be given. Water in form of vapour will reach deep inside and will help in dilute the thickened mucus. Just sit with the child on your lap and place the source of steam before you. Water vapour will be in the air and automatically the child will breathe it in.

You need not worry. Hopefully it would be cured soon.

Regards
