What Causes Muscle Spasms, twitching And Burning In Calves?

default
Posted on Mon, 26 May 2014
Question: Hi,
I am experiencing muscle spasms, twitching and burning in calves, feet and sometimes hands. Get pain in muscles as well all over. This started after my father passed away 3 months ago. I am on citalopram (10 mgs) and lorazepam. Use lorazepam mostly for sleep. Symptoms usually worse when I am tired. I am not experiencing muscle weakness. Still walk and play golf. I just had my physical and blood work was spot on. No issues with blood sugar.
My anxiety is abating somewhat but these symptoms still come and go. Should I seek out a Neurologist to rule out a Neuro disorder? Never had this problem before.

Brief Answer:
Dietary modifications can help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The symptoms you are having can be due to dehydration, muscle fatigue anxiety or electrolyte abnormalities. It is better to drink sufficient fluid and also see that your intake of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium ) is sufficient. You can drink Oralyte for this.
In addition hypothyroidism, Vitamin B 12 deficiency magnesium deficiency (levels checked by blood tests) and excess activity can result in such problems.
Calcium fortified foods like seafood and fish, almonds, flaxseed, oats, prunes, sesame seeds, tofu and XXXXXXX can help to stave off muscle twitching & spasm.
Avoid acidic foods and drinks like tomatoes and vinegar which blocks the body’s natural ability to absorb calcium leading to muscle fatigue.
Take balanced diet rich in calcium (1000mg/day) and vitamin D (1000 i.u. /day) along with vitaminB12, B6.
In case the symptoms do not improve in next 2 weeks then do consult a neurologist for detailed investigations.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
Wishing you good health.
