Question: I'm a 33 year old black female and twice today I had a dull ache behind my left eye. I also could not control my eyelid well. My friend is worried I've had a small stroke and is encouraging an er visit, my husband thinks I should wait for a regular doctors visit. What is your recommendation?

Brief Answer:
Think FAST---

Detailed Answer:
Symptoms of a stroke can be quickly summarized using the following pnemonic:

F.A.S.T. which stands for:

Face- Arm- Speech- Time

Weakness or numbness or paralysis of the face, arm or leg on either or both sides of the body.
Difficulty speaking or understanding.
Dizziness, loss of balance or an unexplained fall.
Loss of vision, sudden blurring or decreased vision in one or both eyes.
Time- don't lose time and call 911

If you see or possess any of the above symptoms which come on suddenly and without warning sometimes accompanied by a severe and unusual headache then, you should get evaluated emergently. It's much better to make an overcall and get to a higher level of care quickly for a professional to evaluate than to make your own guess, be wrong, and then, wish you'd listened to your inner voice telling you something was wrong.

Without knowing anything else about you except for what you've told me I would err on the side of caution and not only Think FAST but I'd recommend that you Act FAST and get to an evaluation center right now. You'll be sorry if you choose not to go and get up tomorrow morning with a droopy face, a closed eyelid, and a weak or numb arm and leg on the left because then, it's behind you and there's not much you can do to avoid damage.
