What Causes Mid Cycle Spotting?

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Apr 2015
Question: Hello,
I am a 39 year old female (low BMI, exercises regularly, non smoker) with occasional spotting between periods. Periods come like clockwork and are normal other than spotting every other month or so. About 5 years ago I had a simple ovarian cyst that went away on its own after 2 months. I just started birth control pills and just finished the second pack. The first month was perfect, no spotting but this month the spotting returned. Is it possible that I have cysts coming and going causing this spotting?
In addition, my pelvic exam and pap were normal.
Thank you!

Brief Answer:
ultrasound advised

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for trusting health care magic.
After reading your history and looking at the fact that your pelvic examination and pap smear are normal, most probably there is nothing to worry and it is just a mid cycle spotting due to sudden drop in estrogen levels after ovulation.
But it is mid cycle spotting only if it occurs right in middle of the cycle around the time of ovulation and is just spotting and not like your periods.
But as you are 39 years old and experiencing spotting even after being on oral pills, I want you to get a pelvic ultrasound done to see for ovaries and endometrial thickness.
Get the test done and then we can discuss further management accordingly.
Take care

Brief Answer:
ultrasound is a must

Detailed Answer:
Yes dear because after 35 years of age any abnormal bleeding should be taken seriously because changes in body after this age progress to abnormal cells very fast so don't take it lightly.
Get the ultrasound done and then we can discuss further management.
All the best
