Posted on Thu, 23 Jul 2015
Question: I have been taking Brintellix since August last year and have a horrible metallic taste in my mouth, which changes the taste of food that I eat. I also have extremely dry lips and a dry mouth. Could these symptoms be side effects of the medication?

Brief Answer:
side effects of brintellix.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to HCM.
I understand your concerns.

You are experiencing metallic taste in mouth and dryness of lips and mouth.

This is most probably due to brintellix.
Xerostomia (dry mouth) is a well-documented side effect of brintellix.

SSRIs, in general, can cause metallic taste in mouth.
As brintellix belongs to the class of SSRIs, it can cause metallic taste in mouth.

You can suck sugar-free candies or chew sugar free gum.
Drink lots of water. Citrus fruits can also help.
Maintain oral hygiene.

If these side effects are very problematic for you, dose reduction of the drug can be considered.

Discuss these issues with your treating doctor.

Hope I have answered your query satisfactorily.

Feel free to ask further.
Thanks.

I never experienced the dry mouth or metallic taste in my mouth while on Celexa, also an SSRI type of drug. Will consult with my prescribing psychatrist about switching back to Celexa.

Brief Answer:
switching back to celexa is a good idea.

Detailed Answer:
Celexa is a well studied and researched drug with established drug profile.

Brintellix, being a novel drug, is still being researched.

Even from the same class, there are always inter-individual variations in response to each drug. Same holds true for side-effects.

Switching back to celexa would be a good idea. (After discussing with your doctor).

Hope this helps.

Take care.
Thanks.
