What Causes Lymph Node Swelling Below The Ears?

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Feb 2017
Question: Hello so about two weeks ago I noticed the lymph nodes just below both ears and under my jaw on both sides were swollen. I went to my GP and he prescribed me an antibiotic for one week. After I finished the antibiotic I still noticed that all the lymphnodes were still swollen and painful. So my doctor sent me for CBC, CMP, RF, Mono stat and ANA and everything came back completely Normal.

Well now I've notice a painful lump on both of my arms on the inside crease of my arm (pulms up, thumb side)My elbows and tender and I have pain behind both my knees and on the side of my knees and lower legs.

I can't help but freak out because everything I look up online always says the worst. I have no fever no night sweats. But some abdominal discomfort and pain in the groin. Please help!!!

Brief Answer:
As detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Noted the history well and understood your concerns.
As per the history provided, my thoughts are as following:
This looks to be inflammation of the lymph nodes all over the body, the cause can not be be found out easily.
All the places you have mentioned contain the lymph nodes.
This can be a viral or gram-negative bacterial infection having affinity for the lymph nodes.
This may not give fever as against expected.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Get the ultrasound guided FNAC of the lymph nodes, as this may give an idea.
Continue antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medication like Ibuprofen and may need oral steroids as the strongest anti-inflammatory measure as you have pain and tenderness.
Do not be freaked out as the history is of short duration and hence suggestive of infection as explained above.
Since the other reports are normal, the worry is still less.

I hope this answer helps you, please discuss with your Doctor and looks forward for proper diagnosis and management.
Please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.

Hello and thank you for the reply. The reason im mostly concerned is because I was told by my Doctor that my blood work is showing I do not have an infection.

Brief Answer:
As explained.

Detailed Answer:
All the investigations are the results of the response of the body to a given stimulus and may not always match the actual disease.
The tests are preferably repeated.
Hence is the importance of clinical evaluation and examination by a Doctor.
Please request for review investigations and get started on proper medications.
