What Causes Lump Sensation In Throat?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Apr 2014
Question: Hi , i have had a lump feeling in my throat for about 4 months now. it feels as if it is moving downward. i first felt it on the right side under my jaw, and it feels now closer to my esophogus. I also have a consistant sore throat and dry mouth and bad breath from it. I had thrush in my mouth just prior to this, and was diagnosed with herpes1. i am worried that there could be herpes in my throat? or that it is spreading lower. It feels like food is getting stuck and not going down all the way, and at first i felt this in the back of my throat, and now I am feeling it below my vocal cords. I am scared and worried. Dr has ruled out strep. And did a throat culture for candida (sample was taken just where my tonsils are. Could it be lower? ENT dr thinks it's acid reflux, but I've never had that in my life. It's constant. I am a singer and a speaker, and it's really depressing me from wanting to do anything. Eating, I feel it more, driniking, I feel it more.. even taking vitamens. I do not have insurance and am only 30 years old. What tests are the ones I need to find out what it is? I have an appointment for an endoscope ( I think that's how you say it) where they put a camera down your throat that sees all the way to your stomach. Please help me!!! Thank you.

Brief Answer: hi, get upper GI endoscopy and CT Scan done. Detailed Answer: Hi madam, your lump sensation in thraot can be because many reason, you say you have bad breath, recurrent sore throat that suggest that you have a chronically infected tonsils. But your throat swab is negative for candida and streptococcus. So not to worry.mild infection persitent for long time can also produce such symptoms. Next your doubt of herpes in oesophagus is very unlikely. Next as your doctor said acidic reflux may be there which is a common cause for lump sensation in throat. Take antacid and proton pump inhibitors drug to reduce it . This can be confimed by endoscopy. You can also get a CT scan of throat done which will give us a clear picture of any lump. So I would suggest you to get endoscopy and CT scan done and treat according to the report. Untill then continue your vitamins tab.take some iron tablets also this will help. Dont worry you will be fine. Take care , do text me the report.thank you.

I realize my worries sound ..... unrealistic... but I had a tramatic event where I trusted the wrong man and he dilberately put his ... "stuff" all down my throat...and it sat there....for quite a few minutes.... same with all in my mouth and on my lips... rubbed it everywhere.... like a psycopath.... :'( I then broke out with cold sores all throughout my mouth and on my lips. Could there be herpes in my throat? Even without an outbreak in my mouth? My sore throat has not gone away since this and its been over 4 months. I dont have insurance and im having trouble finding a doctor to take me seriously when I tell them my story when I see them. Please help!!

Brief Answer: can be an STD, get an endoscopy done Detailed Answer: Hi as you say oesophageal herpes is very unlikely. But you can have some sexually transmitted diseases these will present as ulcers. This again has to be evaluate d by doing endoscopy , or otherwise there is no route to see what has happened. So I still suggest you to get upper GI endoscopy done and see what has happened.

Yes I have made an appointment for that to be done. And I believe they will do a biopsy as well. What should I specifically tell them to test for with the biopsy? Since you mentioned STD's can be disguised as ulcers, I just want to make sure that they test for the right thing. And can they do multiple tests with one biopsy?

Brief Answer: endoscopy and other test for STD. Detailed Answer: Hi madam, yes they can do many test with one biopsy. But do inform them about your suspect on STD, then they can evaluate you in a better way.there are other blood test also for STD . So tell them you want to get it evaluated , if not irs hard to even predict STD in the throat.

i had them test for candida in my throat. They took a sample only where my tonsils are, not any lower down throat. that came out negative. Can they test for STD with the biopsy then? I already know I have herpes, just want to make sure it's not in throat or esopagus, and that there's nothing else going on there. my throat is dry and sore, and even That feels like it's moving lower.

Brief Answer: biopsy, STD, herpes, endoscopy Detailed Answer: Hi, Throat swab is always taken in tonsils area only, ,since its negative do not worry of fungal infection. They have taken biopsy so lets wait for report . They can test for STD also. Oesophageal herpes as you suspect can be there, that again you can know only by endoscopy. If endoscopy says no ulcer or lesion in throat thendont worry of it. As them to test for any STD in biopsy material taken, let's wait for report.
