What Causes Lower Right Back Pain While Suffering From Kidney Stones?

default
Posted on Thu, 30 Mar 2017
Question: Hello, just a quick question for any urologist you would have . I have a history of kidney stones and have been told on my last attack about spring of 2016 that I have a ‘stone quarry’ going in both kidneys. I have in the past few months had week long pains in my back on the right side mainly just at or below the rib cage. No other pains or discomforts or bloody urine. In fact I had my urine tested and it was fine. Just wondering if kidney stones can grow to a size that they would not move beyond the kidney or cause the pain they normally do when moving. ??? I definitely have made diet changes and I think it has helped but heredity has a big part of this problem.

Brief Answer:
yes and no is my answer.

Detailed Answer:
Good day and thank you for being with HealthcareMagic!!

Just to be clear, your question is whether can a stone increase in size big enough that it wouldn't be able to go down the ureter and cause pain and obstruction ?

Well, this is a tricky question, and my answer is yes and no.

If a stone is more than 2.5 cm, it would be considered a staghorn calculi and it wouldn't move anymore as it won't fit in the ureter or renal pelvis and majority of these stones are asymptomatic.

But these type of stones causes renal failure in the long run and these stones are related to chronic infections.

For any stone in the kidney, it has a 15% chance of causing pain and obstruction per year so in 5 years 75% or 2/3 patients would suffer symptoms because of the stone. Any stone less than 2.5cm may obstruct the kidney and ureter and may cause pain.

I hope I have answered your question, I'll be glad to answer if you've any further queries.

Regards
