What Causes Lower Abdominal Spasms?

default
Posted on Wed, 25 Feb 2015
Question: Hello I have been having a phantom twinging spasm like sensation below my lower abdomen and sometimes in the bladder area comes and goes. However, I was told to get a catscan which I did and showed a small fibroid in uterus and a very small hernia on side of navel. I don't have pain but I do get little pressure and sometimes this spasm after I eat. I go to the bathroom ok. I have IBS, hy pylori, herniated lumbar disc and asthma as my conditions along with flutuating high blood pressure. I took a colonoscopy and endoscopy 4 years ago and it was ok. I am some overweight which trying to work on. I just turn 60. I had an endometrial ablation 4 years ago too for I had polycystic syndrome and stopped hemmoraging. I have been back and forth. Even surgeon said you can live with it or I can do a larascopy procedure. I been stressed out and I do get spasms in my back and seem I can get them anywhere. I had lot of gas and flatulence last week and seem it got better when Iwas taking levaquin which I had a bad sinus infect last week. They did a gallbladder abdominal sonogram and that came out ok too. I'm beginning to think besides thehernia, is this stress and kicking the IBS up , I can take a sonogram transvaginal too, just to see what the small fibroid isdoing, but I'm asking your advice what is this pulling sensation spasm and should I wait if the hernia is small or should I do another Endoscopy?

Brief Answer:
Need to know size of uterus and fibroid

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.

Based on your query and attached reports, my opinion is as follows:

1. Dragging sensation could be due to hernia or fibroid.

2. The ligaments supporting the uterus, become weak as age progresses and with the additional fibroid could be causing the dragging sensation.

3. As the hernia is containing only fat, at present, it may not be the cause.

4. Do get the transvaginal ultrasound to look at the size of the fibroid, whether the uterus is enlarged with adenomyosis or more fibroid are present. If its enlarged, more than normal (and not atrophied), surgery to remove it maybe necessary.

5. Endoscopy wont be helpful, as the CAT scan has not revealed any lesions.

Do get the ultrasound done.

Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.

Thank you so much. I was worried about that Endoscopy if it was worth it. I will scheduled the transvaginal ultrasound this week. However, just wanted to note, I had a spasm in my back today, guess all in same area, which is where the herniated disc is so why I'm saying that, put heat it calm down and then my
IBS irritable bowel started, so and a little Imodium (lactose sensitive too) calmed it down, so besides hernia and fibroid, I believe stress is not ruled out either. But thank you so much. I am taking which wasn't my idea and metabolic test too, because I told them didn't want to do endoscopy now. Actually the contrast in the catscan made me real sick. so want to rest my system. is the metablolic test a wa y to see why your metabolism is slow by the way.

Brief Answer:
For slow metabolism - Evaluation for hypothyroidism maybe necessary

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking again.

You are welcome.

1. Stress is more of a emotional state and difficult to evaluate with any physical parameters. Metabolic test, to see if low, may not be helpful.

2. If necessary, get a thyroid hormone profile done. If hypothyroidism, treatment will be necessary. Slow metabolism will be mostly due to hypothyroidism commonly. Hope you have no anemia.

3. Try to relax and exercise more (walking - morning half an hour and evening half an hour). Stretching will also be necessary. Improve nutrition to increase calcium and vitamin levels. Take more soluble fiber diet from fruits and vegetables. Have good hydration.

4. Exercises and meditation reduces stress. Based on ultrasound report, further opinion possible.

Hope it helps.
