What Causes Low INR While On Coumadin?

Question: My friend is taking coumadin for the first time. Her number is 1.2 for several weeks. Yet the consultant is increasing the tablet to 3. Is this something to question?

INR 1.2 is low

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

if you're referring to the INR value (1.2) then this is too low and he should have taken higher doses much earlier. The dosage is always individualized. The target INR range is usually between 2.5 and 3.5 depending on the underlying disease. So if this is his case, there is nothing to question. In order to avoid thrombotic complications the adjustment of INR has to be done in more quick steps.
