What Causes Loss Of Consciousness After Having Hytrin?

default
Posted on Mon, 2 Mar 2015
Question: I recently blacked out for a couple of seconds after urinating a day or two after doubling my Hytrin dosage from 10mg to 20mg (bid). (I fell and got banged up, but luckily avoided serious injury). I recall that gradual easing into the use of this drug is required at inception; is this also the case when increasing dosage (after several years of uneventful usage) as I did? My recent Hytrin increase was from one to two 10mg capsules daily. I also take two 12.5mg captopril tablets daily, and regularly drink grapefruit juice Thank you. XXXXXX ( YYYY@YYYY ).

Brief Answer:
detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I read carefully your query and understand your concern.

It is highly likely that the episode of loss of consciousness was due to Hytrin.
Hytrin (Terazosin) is in a group of drugs called alpha-adrenergic blockers. It acts by relaxing the muscles in the walls of arteries and veins, and the muscles in prostate .For this reason ,this drug can be used to treat high blood pressure and prostate conditions.
A common side effects of it is low blood pressure ,especially at the start of the treatment because the body can adapt gradually and the episodes of hypotension are rare.
Considering the fact that you also take Captopril to treat high blood pressure ,the increase of Hytrin dosage easily caused the drop in blood pressure and the episode of fainting.

This is more likely to happen only in the first doses so this may not happen again. If you experience other episodes or feel light headed ,dizzy and have continuous low blood pressure ,you should discuss this with your treating doctor .

Hope it helps.
Let me know if you have any other question or doubt to clarify.I will be happy to assist you further.

Kind regards,
