default
Posted on Wed, 7 Jun 2017
Question: I am 85 years old; spend 40 years or so jogging 3 to 5 miles per day. About 3 years ago I started to lose
my balance and have a bad time even standing. I go to the gym 3 times per week; do the treadmill
for 1/2 hr @ 2.5 speed; do work on upper body for about 15 minutes, and 15 minutes for balance.
What can I do to improve. I use my cane, except in my home.

Brief Answer:
Check your blood pressure and do a few tests

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I understand your concern and I commend you for being so active. Three times per week of light exercise is just the right amount of physical activity.
However, it is important to identify first the cause for the loss of balance. There can be many reasons for this but it is best to start with a check up. Measuring your blood pressure, sugar levels is a good start. Also the ear could the culprit. Dehydration and even an infection could be to blame.
So I strongly recommend you see a doctor and do a complete check up. In the mean time, I advise you to be use the cane as much as you can, even around the house in order to prevent falls.
I hope this helps.
If you have further questions you are welcome to ask.
Wishing you good health and all the best
