Question: I have taken mega-doses of prednisone for many years, from age 1 to age 13 for nephrotic syndrome. What are common side-effects after high dosages of prednisone many years.

Long term use of steroids can causes following side effects.

1. Increased blood sugars levels which ultimately may lead to Diabetes.

2. Excessive irritation to stomach leading to gastric erosions or Gastric Ulcers.

3. Thinning of bones which in turn increases the risk of fractures.

4. Cataract formation means increased opacification of eye lens.

5. Increased thinning of skin leading to skin tearing , delayed wound healing.

6. Suppression of Immunity leading to frequent infection some among them could be serious.
