default
Posted on Tue, 7 Feb 2017
Question: For the past 3 years I have had a squeezing sensation on the left side of my abdomen. It is right below my rib cage on the front left. It is sometimes very painful and seems to hurt in my back also. Sometimes it is just very annoying and has a numb, tingling feeling along with the squeezing feeling.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the Present/Medical/Medications/Allergies history well and understood your concerns.
As per the history and the findings that your Doctors have said as not related to gastritis and colitis your problems may be either of the following:
Costochondritis.
Radiculopathy that is nerve root compression
Post-herpetic

Please give additional information for me to assist you better:
Any history of direct or indirect local trauma in past?
Any history of Shingles/Herpes zoster?
Does stress/ anxiety or flu increase the pain?
Are there periods of few days that there are no symptoms at all?
What are the instigating or enhancing factors?
What are the relieving factors?
Any other information that you would like to share?

There is no history of trauma or Shingles. I have had chicken pox. I did forget to mention that I am on meds for anxiety but this seems to be a constant thing. I rarely have a day when I don't feel it. The only relief I can get is from Advil or Tylenol and that is not complete relief. I have been told that it is possible that I have costochondritis because they can't seem to find anything else.

Brief Answer:
As described below

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feedback.
If there is pain or pointed local pressure, this may be costochondritis.
As said rightly by your Doctor/s, this may be costochondritis.
If so, I would advise you hte following. This will be diagnostic as well as therapeutic:
-Rest to the area by means of strapping with the Adhesive tapes during the deep Expiration phase. This will limit the movement, reduce the pain and give rest for healing to occur.
-Anti-inflammatory medicines in full dose as per the weight.
-Steroids if required for its strong anti-inflammatory role.
-Control of stress and anxiety helps a lot.
-Local rubrafacient liniments if the area is not covered by strapping.
-Confirmation of the diagnosis by local Doctor on palpation and clinical evaluation and to get prescription based medicines after discussing the above points.

This sort of a treatment helps all my patients. and should help you too.
