default
Posted on Wed, 28 Jan 2015
Question: I wake up every morning with a large amount of mucus in my throat. I go to the bathroom and hack and hack for 15-20 minutes to get it all out. I even have to blow my nose. This has been going on for about a year. It is really depressing me. Can you help me?

Brief Answer:
SINUSITIS/ACIDITY- NEEDS ENT EXAMINATION.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns that you are having mucus accumulation in throat and nasal block. I would like to ask you few more details.

Is there any nasal secretions dripping back into throat (post nasal drip) ?
Is your accumulated mucus associated with any GERD (acidity or burning sensation in chest) ?

Kindly get back to me with the details.

Here my possibility according to your given history and further management:

As per your clinical details, it appears to be chronic sinusitis (over night sinus secretions can cause mucus plug in throat), or GERD (acidity and reflex of gastric contents into throat).

I suggest you to to consult ent surgeon and give detailed history (GERD, gastric ulcer), get detailed Ent examination, nasal endoscopy (deviated nasal septum, sinusitis,), blood tests (allergic rhinitis- absolute eosinophilic count, IgE). Depending on the examination findings, further treatment can be started.

Get back to me with details and if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.
