Posted on Wed, 12 Nov 2014
Question: Recenty I had a bone marrow biopsy to determine why my blood cells are large and have a funny shape to them. This started because my platelets were low. The results of the biopsy was inconclusive and I should be watched closely. What could cause both red and white blood cells to be large, funny shaped, and low platelets?

Brief Answer:
cytochemistry test.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

The cause of both red and white blood cells be large funny shaped and low platelets could be leukemia.

Since bone marrow biopsy was inconclusive i would advise you to do a cytochemistry test.

In this test cells are put on a slide and are exposed to chemical stains that react only with some types of leukemia cells.

These stains cause color changes that can be seen under a microscope, which can help the doctor determine what types of cells are present.

Discuss with your treating physiscian regarding the above test.
