What Causes Large And Soft Stools After Hernia Repair?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Jul 2015
Question: Hysterectomy, bladder sling 2009, repair of anterior/interior wall (vaginal) 2010, MVA, 2010 two weeks after surgery; little attention to back pain; fast forward - 2012 sigmoid resection end to side; infection, hernia repair with mesh covering large area of abdomen. Four weeks ago large BM's caused pulling on left side of rectum; then other side pulled. I am now lying on this area and feel lumps and bumps. I saw Dr at Mayo who said to see motility doctor; however, I know my body too well. Unfortunate events and now, with little doubt, both bladder sling and rectal attachment (I have rectal prolapse) what do I have to look forward to? The large bowel movements occurred after hernia repair and first two issues cannot be addressed, in my humble opinion, until answers as to why after the hernia repair, I get backed up; have very large, but soft stool pass. I have enterography test coming up as the MRI was not conclusive. MRI is also being compared to one taken a year ago. Lost in the cracks.

Brief Answer:
MRI and enterography report needed

Detailed Answer:
Hello mam, thanks for trusting health care magic.
Your problem is indeed gross and that you need multispeciality approach towards your problem.
But before everything else you should get your enterography done and upload the report so that it can be related to the symptoms and MRI report.
All your present symptoms are most likely related to adhesions post surgery and may have got complicated further because of some nerve entrapment or just radiculopathy
Waiting for your response.

First, sigmoid resection failed; left hospital with infection; had hernia repair. It was after the hernia repair that major abdominal pain started but I got hung up with Military System and treated for MVA for two years plus. Now it's so late is it possible to see the area where colon was removed/hernia repair; entire intestinal tract? After major bowel movements which were very large I pulled something near rectum; then another bout of large bowel movement I pulled again hence the bladder sling has apparently slipped and the rectal prolapse is back. Will enterography show my entire gastro area? I have been fighting this; trying to get to the cause of extreme pain near area the surgeon capped (he did end to side) Two years of suffering; not one doctor knows history and I have no life. I did not need the sigmoid resection; that is history, but, after abdomen (hernia repair site where colon was removed) build up of fecal matter began and then when passed so large I compromised the sling and rectal mesh attached to sacral promontory. This will take and act of God or multidisciplinary help but is so complex I'm doing the research which I have done with doctors from your site. However, three doctors have said they'd on't want to deal with my mess and it will take more than one specialist to address. I spent two years being treated for back pain. My spine is extremely good for my age. Reading the report may not be helpful. Is it possible to have the actual tests sent? I cannot give up.
I see you are an oncologist. I don't have cancer. Hard to believe me, but the colorectal surgeon was hungry; if I had a prolapse I could have done PT but he said it could become an emergency and could help with back pain. Believe me, I know this sounds impossible, but, I am truthful; the pain and suffering for the last two plus years is inhumane; nobody should endure what I have because a surgeon/surgeons failed.

Brief Answer:
Pain management specialist

Detailed Answer:
I really appreciate your courage and fighting spirit.
It is quite distressing I know but then to fight is the basic duty of mankind.
All said and done so far will be washed away once you get relief from pain.
In my opinion either it is adhesions or a nerve entrapment which can only be dealt with the help of repeat surgery and obviously you don't want it.
Enterography can definitely give a lot of information but not all of it and thus you will still need surgery.
Alternatively in case you don't have much issues with bowel problem and pain is the main concern then you can opt for pain relief therapies like PCA or spinal analgesics after consulting a pain management specialist.
I know I'm again referring you to some doctor but to guide the best is my motto and will be happy if you land up in safe hands and relieved of the agony.

It is especially hard to swallow that the only surgery necessary was the hysterectomy which required a repair a year later then motor vehicle accident and scared into colorectal surgery; left with infection which led to hernia repair with abdomen covered in mesh. This affects breathing, cramping as bm goes through system (started after hernia repair) and I was treated for chronic pain. One can only stand so much and, as much as I've tried, if a doctor isn't willing to take on my mess; then, if I understand you correctly, I might as well stay on couch and become an invalid. I'm very healthy; drugs were the only treatment except, after MVA, I did every possible thing to improve - and then told colorectal surgery could help with the back pain - I'd give anything to have back pain. I have so much to live for. I stand, things drop and the pressure where he capped colon and placed on side of rectum gets compromised every time I have a bowel movement. And, there is pain at site of removal but I haven't had the luxury of one doctor directing; advising. I'm to pay for mistakes of these doctors? And, I know mistakes are made, but to leave hospital without doctor changing my bandages and getting home and seeing infection compounds my depression and fight. Thanks again.

Brief Answer:
pain specialist management needed

Detailed Answer:
I completely understand your issues and the agony related to them.
But the fighting spirit you have cannot be matched to anyone i must say.
There are very few patients who have been in this much of agony since so much time but still want to sort out things and avail the best possible advise.
In my opinion as your main problem is pain and as you seem fed up from the surgical stress the best option will be to avail services from pain management specialist and thus relieved of the main factor causing distress.
The cause of pain at times cannot be delineated because of the local neuroma formation of just a simple nerve entrapment in an adhesion which is a recurring factor most of the times.
I hope this discussion will help you and may i have a lasting effect in the form of long term pain relief.
