What Causes Itchy Sore Throat And Sniffles?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Oct 2014
Question: I started with a sore throat for a couple of days, then called my PCP, who ordered Septra 500, or the like, BID as my son and spouse have both been sick but son negative for strep and mono (16) this week. I am draining a little and sneezing, but my throat itches and my head is very congested. The odd thing is I am very very tired, and very hot. No fever, actually is under sometimes the normal body temp.

Brief Answer:
Need evaluation..

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns. Do you suffer from post nasal drip?

Based on the details provided, it appears to be pharyngitis secondary to virus infection where antibiotic therapy is not helpful. Further septra (trimethopram+sulphomethaxazole) best works for urinary, diarrhea or respiratory infection and not useful in treating sore throat. Therefore if I were your treating doctor, I would stop septra. Instead, I will prefer that you consult an ENT surgeon if possible and get laryngoscopy done to know the extent of infection and involvement of other organs (base of tongue, epiglottis, voice box). A better antibiotics (such as pencillin group of antibiotics) and nasal decongestants may be started.

In the interim I advise you to do steam inhalation with eucalyptus oil to relieve congestion in nose and sinuses.Take proper diet to prevent dehydration and tiredness.

Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health
