What Causes Itching Sensation All Over Body Post Multiple Abdominal Operations?

Question: i had sevsral abdominal operations in npv and dec . i have a profound problem with itcing throughout my body, cannot sleep or function . cannot stop the itcing all night. not as bad during the day. was prescribed hydroxyzine, makes me sleep too much a day int night,,what is casinf the itching, would an allergist help in this matter, where can i get an exxpanationof what is happening to my body. while in hospital i was so ill i required over thrty pints of blood, is this a possible cause, the doctor who prescrbed the itching drug did not know i had an itching problem when i was released in XXXXXXX ..amtyping with one hand, other is broken..please help..

Thanks for contacting HCM with your health care concerns.

Your itching is a direct cause from the blood products you were given during your hospital stay. There is no way to reduce the itching other than letting time run its course.

I have other suggestions for you to help reduce the itching. I would recommend a short course of steroids like prednisone for 2 weeks. This may reduce the release of histamine or other chemicals that cause itching.

An additional medication that may help is doxepin which is actually an antidepressant but has significant anti-itch properties.

Both of these products need to be prescribed by your doctor.
