What Causes Intestinal Colitis?
Question: What is interstitial cystitis? I was diagnosed with this about 4 years ago after having a colonoscopy . I have had no treatment and feel I am getting much worse, now have severe pain, sudden urges for BM and must get to the bathroom immediately or will have and accident. My BM will be within 10 minutes to 1 hour after eating (and can continue ever 1- 2 hours all day and night). Any help you can give me would be much appreciated.

Hello,
Welcome to the HCM.
Dear I have gone through your history and it seems you might be having intestinal colitis.
It causes inflamation of the colon's inner lining and the rectal wall.,which becomes red ,swollen and ulcerated ,resulting in abdominal pain or cramping and on and off loose motions .
I would like to know that do you have joint pains,and complain of recurrent oral ulcers ?Have you had full blood count test to rule out anemia?Do you have symptoms of appetite loss,fatigue or anything you have missed to tell me.
Also If you could upload report of your colonoscopy ,I may get help to clarify you more to differentiate between two types of intestinal colitis.(ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease).

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond so quickly to me. The wording given to by GI doctor was "interstitial" colitis, resulting from the biopsies that he performed. Unfortunately I do not ( not can I get) have access to that report - as I have tried.
I will be seeing my PCP next month and a full blood work will be done at that time ( I am I do have so a type II diabetic A1C has been 6.2) think I will be rescheduling to an earlier date as yes I do have joint pain (hands, knees, shoulders, etc.) I am fatigued and yet have difficulty sleeping for very long. I try very hard to keep active. As far as my appetite, well it comes and goes. At times I'm hungry and then I just feel to nauseous to continue eating.

Thankyou for telling more about your history.It seems that you have been suffering from inflamation in colon .
It could be either ulcerative which involve only colon and may cause systemic symptoms like,joint pain,anemia,rectal bleeding etc Or Crohn's disease (a type of inflamation of colon which involve mouth to anus and cause skip type of lesions with systemic symptoms.
From biopsy and colonoscopy report ,it could be ruled out what type of inflamation it is.
Dear treatment for this type of colitis is multifaceted and includes the use of medication,alteration in diet and nutrition and sometime surgical procedures to repair or remove affected portion of gastrointestinal tract.
As colitis is not caused by the foods you eat,you may find that once you have the disease ,particular foods can aggravate the symptoms.I would suggest have soft ,bland foods and avoid spicy and higher fiber food.Sometime lactose intolerance happen associated with this disease because of recurrent loose motions ,so you may need avoid dairy foods if you are found to be lactose intolerant.It is important to maintain a healthy and soothing diet that helps reduce your symptoms ,replace lost nutrient ,and promote healing.
For treatment you might need anti inflamatory and immunomodulator medications like mesalazine and methotraxate.
I would suggest to get reports of colonoscopy and also biopsy to rule out the type of colitis ,so it may get treated accordingly.
