What Causes Intermittent Abdominal Pain After Eating?

default
Posted on Thu, 7 Jul 2016
Question: Hello Doctor,

Some 10 days back I had non-veg food at a roadside joint. Since then I am having intermittent abdominal pain which is rotating and not at a specific place. Initially I ignored for a week thinking it might be due to exercise in the gym. However, 3 days back I had loose motions couple of times. Post that I visited a basic doctor near my house who prescribed me a couple of doses to improve digestion. While the pain has reduced to certain extent, i still get it at regular intervals and have loose motions (may 8-10) in a day. While this has not hampered by daily activities and I go to office as well, just wanted to check what medication and precaution I can take.

Brief Answer:
Need some further details regarding..

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX, Welcome to HCM..

I've gone through your query and understand your concern..

Now some of your descriptions need further details so that specific opinion can be sought..so please go through the following questions and answer them step by step:

Try to locate the area of pain where it's happening mostly- is it upper abdomen/ lower abdomen/around umbilicus/below umbilicus or any particular side(right or left) ??

What relieves or worsens the pain ?

Any nausea/vomiting ?

Kindly observe the motion and inform me how is it ? is it loose (watery or semi-solid) ? Color ? any particular Smell ? Does the pain relieve immediately after passing motion ? how much is the quantity of the motion ?

Any fever ?

"doctor near my house who prescribed me a couple of doses to improve digestion"- what do you mean by that ? what is the specific name of the medicine that you've taken ?

It's already been a while and it seems like Gastro-enteritis so please answer the above questions so that I can guide you further ..

I've seen that you're also consuming protein supplementation from the other query of yours, so I'd advice you to stop taking the supplementation immediately as it'd further worsen the complaints..restart it only after a complete recovery..

Meanwhile take strict care of your diet - no road side foods at all, eat only simple home-cooked meals..

Also drink only mineral water or R.O/UV treated water..drink a lot of water to avoid any dehydration(at least 3-3.5 ltr per day)..

Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly with anti-bacterial hand-wash solution every time before and after using wash-room..

Specific medication will be required too, which I'll advice after receiving those answers, so take your time and answer them for me ..

Awaiting your response..

Take Care

Brief Answer:
need further investigations as well as clinical evaluation..

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back XXXX,

Thanks for following up..

Now that you've shared the details , let me assure you that these symptoms are indicating towards Gastroenteritis only.. However since it's already been 10 days as you've mentioned earlier(gastroenteritis is a self limiting condition otherwise and mostly required supportive management) and still there's loose motion persisting so you need to go for a Stool Examination(Routine Microscopy as well as culture Sensitivity) to look for the specific organism..specific antibiotic therapy may need to be started as per the the reports, you can simply visit your nearby Internal medicine specialist for a clinical evaluation and necessary prescriptions for this..

Since probiotics have already been started, continue it for the time being.. Also start taking ORS solutions(just buy WHO-ORS solution), dissolve one packet in 1 liter of mineral water and drink over a period of 6-8 hours and another pack over another 12 hours for next 3-4 days to avoid any electrolyte imbalance as well as dehydration..you can also start taking yogurt on a daily basis, it'll provide relief..no outside junk foods..

Apart from this , please follow all other advises as I've already mentioned, follow good hand hygiene, drinking proper mineral water, remember to stay well-hydrated and dietary supplementation to be restarted only after complete recovery..

Take Care
Kind Regards
