What Causes Inflammation And Pain In Gums Post Tooth Extraction?

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Nov 2015
Question: Hi
I have had all my teeth pulled and on one side i hardly have any gums left cause of all the infections i have had. Now it hurts way in the back of my gum. I have had this for two days now...I have false teeth but dont wear the bottoms because they hurt to much. But i do wear the top dentures...Is it normal to have pain when you dont have any teeth? Should i do salt rinses? would that help?
I meant to say i have hardly no bone left on that side, cause of all the infections i have had.

Brief Answer:
Seems like sharp pointed areas on the denture or a bony spicule.

Detailed Answer:
Hi...
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns...

As per your complain there is a possibility that you have some pointed and sharp elevations over the tissue surface of the lower denture on the painful side and as it would be rubbing over the gums while you wear denture it would be causing injury to the gums leading to inflammation and pain.
There can also be any sharp bony elevation known as Bony Spicule which can be formed post extraction due to irregular and sharp inter dental bone left untrimmed at the time of extraction and if it rubs against denture it can cause pain..

Kindly answer the following questions so that I can guide you better..
1.When you started having pain did you wear your denture during that time and you stopped wearing the denture due to pain?
2.Are the gums o the area of pain swollen and red?
3.Just move your finger over the inner surface of the denture and do you feel any sharp areas?
4.Touch the gums in the painful areas and do you feel any sharp or elevated areas like any elevated nodule?

Kindly answer the following questions so that I can guide you better towards treatment..

Wishing you a good health.

Thanks and regards.

I havent worn my bottom denture at all because they hurt to much. And i got my teeth pulled over 2 years ago now. I dont feel any sharp edges on my gums, there maybe a little swollen. I ate a caramel apple and i think i hurt it that way. Its on the side where i dont have hardly any bone left, due to all the infections that i had before. Its going down my neck too....I made an appointment to see the dentist tomorrow at 8 am. I havent had any pain since i got my teeth pulled until now.

Brief Answer:
May be some remaining root piece..

Detailed Answer:
Hi..
Welcome Again..

As per your reply there may a small piece of root remaining that has been broken and left out in the place and has been flaring up now and this can happen even after 2 years also..
But as it is just 2 days may be some hard food had caused injury to gums in that area and inflammation of gums is causing pain..
As of now you can do warm saline gargles, apply a numbing gel containing Lignocaine over the painful area, you can take anti-inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen and suck on ice for relief..
Avoid hot, spicy and hard foods to prevent further irritation..

In case if there is no relief even after one week you can consult your dentist and get an IOPAR (x-ray) done to rule out what exactly is causing pain..

Any further questions are welcome..

Wishing you a good health..

Thanks and regards.

Yes, could be an infection..

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Welcome Again.

Yes, it could be an infection if there is some root piece left over as I explained before..Any confirmation of cause needs a clinical evaluation..
So as you will visit the dentist tomorrow kindly let me know the diagnosis and scan of x rays if taken so that I will guide you further towards resolving your pain..

Wishing you a good health..
