Posted on Fri, 2 Dec 2016
Question: I am allergic to sound I think. when I am sitting in a quiet atmosphere, when I hear a sudden sound I get shocked. I mean if I am in a silent room & if someone opens the door suddenly, I shiver suddenly. when I am somewhere & if a dog barks, suddenly that makes me shocked, I shiver (example: Hiljata hoon suddenly. if am drinking tea, I drop the glass when I hear sudden sound). during Diwali also this bothers me a lot. if someone bursts cracker, I feel the same.
My friends make fun at me because of this. pls advice

Brief Answer:
This is Exaggerated startle response

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for using healthcaremagic.
I read your query and understand your concerns.

First of all I like to inform you that what you are describing is exaggerated startle response. In other words everyone of us have startle response but your response is exaggerated. Most startle response are often associated with negative emotions as it indicates vulnerability of individual.

Having said this you may be having isolated startle response or it may be part of anxiety disorder. Due to hyperarousal of cortical system person gets exaggerated startle response and same is responsible for anxiety.

Although there are no medications for treatment of isolated startle response anti anxiety medications used in the treatment of anxiety can be helpful for the treatment of this condition. I must acknowledge that best treatment for exaggerated startle response is psychotherapy or counseling.

In my view it will be better if you can follow the simple principles of stress management as there is good possibility of decreasing intensity of startle response.

I hope this helps you.
If you have more questions feel free to write back to me.
Thanks and regards.
