What Causes Increased Crying And Lack Of Appetite In Infant?

Question: Dear Dr,

My newborn baby is 2 weeks old. During the first week of care, baby sleep pattern is pretty consistent. Every 2 hours he will wake up crying for milk and fall deeply in sleep thereafter.

Recently the pattern had sinced change. He don drink much at one go and sometimes he will drink 3 seperate intervals for 80ml of milk. After that he fall asleep only to cry after half hour. He doesn't sleep as much as he does initially. And he is woken up by the slightest touch. His eyes will open wide and start to cry, but the crying is different is softer and felt moaning ...

He refused to be burped after drinking milk ... He struggle and straighten all his limbs like angry and turn red.. He wasn't like tat a week ago. He will look satisfied and burp after feeding ..

His stools are golden brown and seemed ok. Urine looked fine.

What are the possible areas we need to consider ?

Brief Answer:
may be hunger cry

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the query.
It looks like hunger cry as you told that baby wake up and cries after every half hour.
Generally baby rest/sleeps for 2 to 3 hrs after adequate feeding.
Latche the baby properly to the breast( whole nipple and areola should be in the babys mouth).
While feeding try to keep baby awake foratleast 15 to 20 mins by cuddling his feet or ears.

If there is vomiting we need to rule out gastro esophageal reflux.
Colic pain may also be the reason for excessive cry in newbrons.
Hold baby upright for atleast 20 to 30 mins after feed to relive colic.
Can you please tell me how many times baby passes motion and urine in 24 hrs?

Urine output should be 6 to 8 tims per day.
If baby is gaining adequate weight after 7th day onwards along withnormal cry , toneand activity there is nothing to worry.
Hope i helped you.

Hi dr Thks for your reply.

His urine output is about 7times a day.

He doesn't fall into deep sleep. Like his eyes is half closed and he is moving a lot while sleeping. Sleepin environment no changes... And well maintained. May I know the common reason ? He constantly open and closed his eyes. There is a lot of expression while he "sleep"

Brief Answer:
it's normal

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the follow up.
I would like to tell you that regular breathing and sleeping pattern takes some time to develop.
Newborn babies may be in deep sleep still they may active.
Making noises and eye movement while rapid eye movement sleep is common.
If everything like weight gain and urine, stool output is normal , you need not to worry.

Hope i helped you.

Thks again for reply.

I heard from people that disposable diapers are not good for baby boys as it get trapped heat and not good for testicle development in future. Is that true?

Brief Answer:
you are partly correct

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the follow up.
I would like to tell you that, do not worry about the development of testicles, as diaper will not have any effect on it.
Heat trapping and sweating may cause irritation and rash due to excessive use.
Also urine , stool may cause ammoniacal dermatitis.
So better way you should keep minimum use of diaper like while traveling and at night.
Otherwise loose cotton cloth (langot) is good.
Hope i helped you.
