Question: My. Two year old grandson has been getting up in the middle of the night crying, kicking and trying to bang his head. He has been doing this on a more frequent basis (now nearly every night) he is inconsolable and and tries to kick you when you go to hold him ....does this for over ten minutes., usually ending in walking with him and eventually he will fall asleep. It is scary to watch him do this . We thought it was night terrors or he is in pain. During the day he is perfectly fine and takes a nap for 1-2 hours. What should we do?

Hello,
Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic.
Inconsolable cry at night and kicking of legs difficult to control in a two year old could be due to head ache.
Head ache could be due to raised intracranial pressure.
Intracranial pressure is the pressure in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
CSF is the fluid present around the cerebral hemispheres.
Increase in pressure can occur in number of conditions like infections, obstruction or increased production of CSF.
A young child cannot express the site of pain so head banging is the only way t relieve the pain.
On the basis of the history this is what can be thought of.
The appearance of symptoms at night only can be due to some cause which raises the pressure at night only.
You need to consult pediatrician for clinical assessment, relevant investigations (measurement of intracranial pressure, CT head etc) and thus management.
If you have more queries, I will be glad to answer.
