What Causes Hypergastritis?

default
Posted on Tue, 22 Apr 2014
Question: My wife got a stomach bug and about a week later I seemed to get it. We both noticed large amounts of mucus when wiping and mucus on stool. Time passed and my bowels seemed to recover but I noticed a clear translucent film on the water after a BM. My stool was normallay formed and brown( sometimes darker sometimes lighter). This had been a few months so I went to my doctor who did labs, all normal. I saw my gastro and said i did have some gastritis ( which i've show for 15 years) but lower scope totally normal. all biopsies normal. So in the end I was told the film was likely mucus and that my hyper acidity probably irritates my small intestine a bit so it increases mucus production. Well it's been 6 months and I saw my GI yesterday. I explained that I don't feel bad but I still noticed the film( sometimes less sometimes more). She weighed me and I actually gained a lb. she looked at my labs and said still diagnoses stress IBS/ gastritis type issue. I did have a doctor tell me when I first had my sx that he thought it was giardia. I mentioned this to my GI as well and she said that because i have basically gotten back to normal she didn't think a drug to treat a possible parasite was neccesary but that some altered bowel symptoms can linger for months and even years and take a long time to totally return to normal. So she told me she was sure it was nothing severe because of time passed normal labs and testing and no weight loss. She said to stop worrying about it and to try to eat healthier then sent me on my way.

Brief Answer: Try Probiotics Detailed Answer: Hi I am Dr Mittal I am going to try to help you with your query It seems you have hypergastritis from the symptoms. Dud they do an endoscopy for you? That could have confirmed the diagnosis. As for the mucus thing, there is a possibility that this is IBS or a parasites infection. I am assuming you have had antibiotics so far. I would suggest you let me know the medicines you have taken. Then I can make out in case some of the medicines you have taken may have affected the parasitic infection as well And I feel you should talk to your doctor again. There is a possibility that the altered bowel habits may respond to probiotics. So you could have a prescription of those. I hope that helps, Please respond with the information requested. If you could upload the investigations done, it may help too Best of luck Dr Mittal

Thanks for looking again. Yes I had a endoscopy, it confirmed mild gastritis. I have struggled with gastritis for 15 years. My current test results showed mild gastritis and colonoscopy showed hemorrhoid. My blood work was normal. My stool is basically normal with the exception of that translucent film of which my gastroenterologist says is mucus. History - 6 months ago my wife noticed bowel changes. She thought it was a stomach virus. 10 days later I came down with the same symptoms which were gas, pressure, urge to go, and mucus on the stool and noticed a lot when wiping. No fever, no vomiting, no diarrhea. I went to primary, I went to my GI and no one is concerned. I had all the testing listed above. It has been 6 months, I have actually gained weight. No issue other than film. To this day my wife also says she notices mucus on her stool sometimes. Neither of us took antibiotics. Wife seems to have gotten more back to normal than me. Just being my own advocate and seeing if an IBS/ hyper acidic issue could cause this. Or is likely the cause
