Question: My 28 year old son has had temp of 102.2 that has not been affected by Ibuprofen 800 mg given 1.5 hrs ago. Was seen in urgent care for flu and strept test::: both negative but was given ibuprofen 800 mega 8hrs and Amoxicillin 500mg bid. Has had one dose. Complains of headache and body aches. I am concerned . Should we give more ibuprofen ? He had pnemococcal meningitis years ago at age 18. L. Says his neck a little sore but can move it freely and touch chin to chest. Thinks it is sore from sleeping so much today. Also took cool shower to bring temp down. It is still 102.

You can add paracetamol.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

Since 800 mg of ibuprofen did not work in bringing down the temperature, you can use paracetamol 1 g every 6 to 8 hours for this purpose ( if there is no known contraindication such allergies etc.).

You should wait at least 6 hours before giving the next dose of ibuprofen.

About meningitis, if the neck becomes stiff and neurological signs such agitation, lethargy are notable, your son should be treated in hospital.
