default
Posted on Thu, 16 Apr 2015
Question: I have high SGPT and SGOT levels (about double of the permissible limit). I do not drink alcohol.
However, I am taking antidepressant medication along with mood stabilizers. Can I bring down by increased levels of enzymes in the liver by diet, life style changes, etc ?

Brief Answer:
DIET AND LIFESTYLE CHANGES

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Welcome to healthcaremagic.com.
This is Dr. Swarnava Dattagupta answering your query.

Higher SGPT and SGOT levels may denote liver dysfunction or liver injury. Liver dysfunction or injury can be due to many causes and infections like hepatitis are most common. Obstructive liver diseases can also lead to incresed levels. Even some antidepressant drugs can lead to it because they are toxic to liver. If you are taking antidepressants for a long time, it can be a probable cause. In such a case, I will advise you the following-

Take small frequent meals a day.
Avoid fatty and junk food, take more fruits and vegetables. Take dietary fibers too.
Do exercises like brisk walking, cycling, swimming etc.
Continue ursodeoxycolic acid that you have started.
Talk to your doctor about changing the dosage of antidepressants if required.
Get a repeat LFT done after 2-3 weeks.

Hope I have answered your query.
