Question: When ever my husband tries to eat he gets the hiccups so bad he ends up vomiting. They are progressively getting worse. It started a few months ago. He is 65 years old and otherwise healthy. Just has medication for high blood pressure. At first we thought it may be spicier foods but he can’t even eat scrambled eggs now.

Brief Answer:
Irritation of diaphragm.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

The continuous irritation of diaphragm could be a cause of recurrent hiccups. Anatomically diaphragm is supplied by phrenic nerves. Injury to these nerves may lead to recurrent hiccups.

A tumor or infection in your central nervous system or damage to your central nervous system as a result of trauma can disrupt your body's normal control of the hiccup reflex and could cause it.

He needs to be examined by a neurologist at the earliest and appropriate investigations need to be done such as MRI of the Head and Brain, MRI of the Neck and Chest and Abdomen to find the exact cause for the hiccups.

Please consult a neurologist along with the gastroenterologist at the earliest and proceed further.

Hope I was helpful.
Regards
