What Causes Heart Palpitations, Fatigue, Dizziness And Excessive Sweating?

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Mar 2017
Question: I've been having palpitations of my heart, especially during CV excercise and excertiom, fatigue, dizziness upon standing, and sweating quite profusely. Nine days ago I received an epidural injection in my lumbar region after several months of painful sciatica. I am going to have another in about 10 days. Are my symptoms the cause of the injection.?
Along with the symptoms which have occurred only the last 4 days, my ankles are swelling just a little for the first time in the last month. I am 80 years of age.
Question 1: Could my symptoms be due to the injection.
Question 2: Should I make an appt asap to see a cardiologist? Thanks!!

Brief Answer:
No it does not

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome.
This is Dr Sameer, cardiologist.
1) Epidural Analgesia does not cause increased heart rate, on the other hand, it can cause decreased heart rate or heart blocks. So it is not because of this.
2) Yes you should see a cardiologist.

Increased heart rate & palpitations can have a lot of causes.
It can be normal sinus tachycardia due to anxiety or stress or it could be abnormal supra ventricular tachycardia.
For the diagnosis, you need to do ECG at the time of palpitation & tachycardia. If the duration of palpitations are short enough to reach a nearby hospital, we put a 24hr ECG monitoring (Holter Monitor). You also need to do a 2D Echo & thyroid function test to see for any associated abnormality if any.
Giddiness upon standing & fatigue could be because of orthostatic hypotension. So in the meanwhile drink a lot of water.
Hope i was helpful.
Thanks
Take care
