Question: Hi I am a 38-year-old women 3 days ago I had all four of my impacted wisdom teeth removed. This evening I starting experiencing heart palpitations should I be worried? I am in a considerable amount of pain and haven't had the pain medication in two day. Could it be stress from the pain?

Brief Answer:
Should be on pain "killers"

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to HCM. Thank you for your query.
I understand your concern.

Every stressful situation can be accompanied with premature contractions of the heart muscle. Here is included vigorous phyical activity, psychological stress, stress from pain etc. In times of stress to the organism, it releases substantial amounts of epinephrine and norepinephrine which, among other effects, also take the heart workload to "overdrive", hence the "skipped" heart beats. At this point, if you are under pain, I see no reason why you do not take your anti-pain medication.

Therefore, my main recommendation would be for you not to tolerate pain and resume the medication, until the pain is gone. It is only when you will be completely pain-free when we can judge whether these phenomena will go away. If they persist (not one or two times a day, as these amounts can happen to anyone), then feel free to contact again.

I hope my answer was helpful. Feel free to ask follow-up questions, as I am ready to help.

Best regards,
Dr. Meriton
